    Tomato - Brandywine

    The Tomato Pole Brandywine, ‘Lycopersicon Lycopersicum’, is considered by many to be the best tasting tomato in the world and it has won lots of taste tests. You simply cannot believe the flavor of this tomato. The Brandywine is an old Amish heirloom tomato dating back to 1885 and passed down from generation to generation. The Brandywine is a pink beefsteak type of tomato with thin skin and a rich flavor. The tomatoes will attain weights of up to 1 pound. Brandywine is an intermediate tomato which means they continue to grow indefinitely until frost. Tomatoes are generally started inside. They may also be seeded outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Pole Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes need at least 1 inch of water a week. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Prune the intermediate tomatoes in order to keep a single stem.

    Immortelle - Double Mix

    The Immortelle Double Mix, ‘Xeranthemum annuum’, provides shaggy everlasting daisies on long stems. They are essential for dried flowers bouquets and wreaths. The full, 1 to 2 inch wide fully double daisies, range in color from shades of pink, white, and purplish/wine. They are easy to grow and exhibit silvery foliage. The Immortelle begins to bloom in early summer and continues through summer. The Double Mix Immortelle prefers full sun and any well drained garden soil. They do well in dry, infertile soils. Plant in the early spring, 2 to 3 weeks before the last spring frost. The Immortelle is excellent for cut flowers, flower borders, or in wildflower plantings.

    Morning Glory - Heavenly Blue

    The Morning Glory Heavenly Blue, ‘Tpomoea tricolor’, has glorious 4 to 5 inch sky blue flowers. They are called morning glory because blooms open in the cool of the morning. During the fall, flowers open all day. The flowers of the Heavenly Morning Glory are 4 to 5 inches wide and are sky blue with a white throat. . They will bloom from summer until fall frost. The Heavenly Blue Morning Glory does not like to dry out, so water frequently. Morning glories seem to bloom earlier and with more blooms when they are constricted to a pot. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Plants started too early are less vigorous than those started later. This excellent vine will cover fences and trellises, grow as ground cover, or hang in large baskets or pots.

    Amaranth - Edible-Red Leaf

    The Amaranth Edible Red Leaf, ‘Amaranthus tricolor’, is a heat loving summer green that is even more nutritious than spinach or beet greens. This plant is showy enough for blower beds with its coleus appearance. The flavorful foliage has a hearty spinach flavor that is sweet and slightly tangy. Amaranth loves the heat and is a favorite source of salad greens when other spring green crops have all been harvested. Amaranth can be steamed, stir fried, or sauteed. Mix Edible Red Leaf Amaranth with spaghetti sauce, rice, or meatloaf for added taste. The medium green oval leaves are overlaid with burgundy red stars that make this plant look a bit like coleus. This plant is known as Callaloo in the Caribbean, Bhaji in India and is also known as Joseph’s Coat. Plant when soil temperatures are warm. Amaranth will tolerate most soils, but prefers light, loamy soils.
