    Prairie Dream Paper Birch

    The Prairie Dream Paper Birch, Betula papyrifera ‘Varen’ (PP15,768), is a beautiful, stress-tolerant selection from North Dakota. The snow white bark exfoliates with age, adding a great deal of winter interest. It displays an attractive, bright golden-yellow autumn color. It is resistant to bronze birch borer. Prairie Dream has a semi-pyramidal to upright-oval growth habit, becoming broadly-oval with age. This deciduous birch is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. This easy to grow tree will add color and interest to any yard. This is a clump version of the tree.

    Southern Red Oak

    The Southern Red Oak tree, Quercus falcata, is characterized by its rough bark. The Southern red oak is also referred to as Spanish oak. Southern Red Oak trees are a medium-sized tree with a short trunk and large branches supporting a rounded crown. The bark is dark gray in color, furrowed, and is marked by rough ridges and plates. It is a tree of the Old South, ranging from Maryland to Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. The acorns are usually produced singly, and biennially. They are 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, roughly spherical and orange-brown. Songbirds, turkey, a variety of small mammals and deer eat the nuts. The Southern Oak tree is deciduous and is a good shade tree adapted to drier sites. The wood of the Southern Red Oak is strong and coarse-grained.

    Hydrangea - Glowing Embers

    Glowing Embers Hydrangea, Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Glowing Embers’, displays large round clusters of bright pink blossoms from mid-summer to fall. It is an attractive companion plant to evergreens in a foundation planting or massed under tall trees. A compact growing plant with shiny, dark green leaves and glowing red blooms make this a winner. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. It requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings. Glowing Embers prefers full sun and grows 3 feet in height and width. Hydrangeas bloom on large buds formed on previous season’s growth, any pruning should be done immediately after flowering. The flowers are good for cutting and drying.
