The Pepper Chile Habenero, ‘Capsicum chinense’, is the hottest known pepper in the world! It adds fire and a distinctive citrus flavor to salsas, chutneys and soups. The Habenero Chile Pepper is prized by chile aficionados not only for its intense heat, but its distinct fruitiness. The Habeneros will turn a bland barbeque into a fiery feast. Transplant outside in the spring 3 to 4 weeks after last frost date. Note: To get a jump on the season transplant outside, use a walls-of-water or some black plastic to maintain and increase temperatures. Plant in average garden soil with sufficient organic matter. Peppers use quite a bit of water but prefer to be watered deeply and not too often. Harvest when 1 inch long or longer. Use gloves and do not touch any other part of the body after harvesting. Wash your hands immediately.

The Chocolate Flower, ‘Berlandiera lyrata’, has it all. The colorful, fragrant plant attracts butterflies and is drought tolerant and the aroma may either satisfy or intensify your craving for chocolate. This plant is also called chocolate daisy, greeneyes, lyre-leaf greeneyes, and brooch flower. Chocolate Flowers have 1 1/2 inch composite flowers with yellow center rays and a maroon center disk array. The flowers bloom at night, making their chocolate fragrance most noticeable in the morning. Chocolate Flowers prefer well drained, average, dry soils. Place them in full sun and do not fertilize. Deadhead regularly to extend the bloom season. Plant this flower in groups along a walkway or patio for maximum effect.

The Bean Pole Runner Scarlet Emperpr, ‘Phaseolus coccineus’, has large sprays of brilliant rich, red flowers that contrast against deep green foliage. The Scarlet Emperor is grown for the flowers and the sweet pods. With such magnificent slender clusters of rich red flowers, the Scarlet Emperor is predominantly used as a flowering screen, vine, or fence cover. A little known fact is that this runner bean has an extremely rich beany sweet flavor when picked young. The pods may also be shelled for green or dried beans when pods mature. The Scarlet Emperor is an annual and is very frost sensitive. Pole types have 3 to 7 foot long vines. They have up to 12 inch long pods at maturity. Plant after the last average frost date. Scarlet Emperor beans prefer rich, organic, well drained, warm soils.
