The Marigold French Dwarf Bonanza Blend, ‘Tagetes patula’, has the pure intense colors of Bonanza plus the improved flower size. It has the largest flowers in the French Marigold category. The Bonanza Blend has 2 inch yellow, orange, and bicolor flowers. They will begin blooming 5 to 6 weeks after seeding and they will continue to bloom until fall. Marigolds prefers rich organic soils. The soil needs to be well drained and not soggy. Pinch off faded flowers to encourage more blooms. Plant in the spring after average last day of frost. French Dwarf Marigolds are excellent for edging, in pots and containers. They make an excellent annual ground cover.

The Feverfew, ‘Tanacetum (Chrysanthemum) parthenium’, displays charming clusters of small daisy-like flowers on aromatic bushy plants. The Feverfew has a long history as an herbal remedy and it is popular in Victorian gardens. Feverfew is a reliable, unfussy plant with masses of small white flowers on strong-scented ferny yellow-green foliage. In a cottage style garden, use Feverfew as a long blooming filler between other old-fashioned flowers such as roses. It is also know as Featherfew, Composite, Bachelor’s or Bride’s Button and Midsummer Daisy. Plant in the early spring when the soil is cool or in late fall. Feverfew prefers well drained soils and moderate to low water conditions. Do not over water. Plant in full sun and deadhead regularly if you do not want to establish volunteer seeds for next year.

The Lettuce Leaf Black Seeded Simpson, ‘Lactuca sativa’, has a delicate flavor and the plant withstands heat, drought, and light frost. If you want to produce a fast lettuce crop, this is the variety. The Black Seeded Simpson is an old favorite, both because of it’s flavor and because of it’s earliness. The full sized leaves can be harvested in just a little over a month and “greens” can be harvested in 3 weeks. Black Seeded Simpson has crinkled green leaves and the leaves at the center of the plant are almost white when allowed to grow to full maturity. Lettuce is a cool season annual. Successive plantings can produce lettuce spring through fall. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the average last frost date, and successive plantings thereafter every 3 weeks until 5 weeks before fall frost. Lettuce likes light, fertile, moist, and well drained soils. They will grow in light shade. Lettuce grows well near cabbage, beets, carrots, chives, garlic, and onion.

The Squash Spaghetti Winter Vegetable Spaghetti, ‘Cucurbita pepo’, can be served just like pasta. When cooked, the flesh separates into long spaghetti-like strands. This very tasty squash can be stored for up to 6 months. In addition to the subtle, tasty flavor, Spaghetti Squash can be prepared with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese or pesto sauce, just like real pasta. The plants produces 5 to 7 squash each. The squash are rounded, cylindrical and tan in color. Plant in the spring, 2 to 4 weeks after the last average frost date. Squash prefers well drained, rich soil with lots of organic matter. Harvest after first or second light frost. They should be harvested when you can’t dent the hard skin with your finger. Winter squash cannot be overripe, but can be under ripe.
